Desert Flower is a school in Ladakh, within the community of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL). It starts from one simple idea: begin with the child, not the subject.
Early Years / Kindergarten opens in 2026. Applications for 2027-28 open next year. The plan is a full K-12 school.
Every child carries a seed already waiting to unfold.
Most schools begin with a curriculum and ask the child to fit it. Desert Flower begins with the child. Learning is rooted in Ladakh, built by doing rather than only listening, and connected across subjects the way real problems are. And there is real, protected time to reflect.

Desert Flower is built on Integral Education, the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. A child is not an empty vessel. She is a seed, and a good school helps the whole of her flower: body, feelings, mind and spirit.

A Desert Flower classroom moves in a cycle. Meet something real. Build or do something with it. Reflect honestly on what was learned. Then connect it outward, to other subjects, to Ladakh, and to the child’s own life.

A school designed for learning.
After the K-12 campus design: a ring of learning spaces around a courtyard and a terraced amphitheatre, opening onto six gardens.
The campus is shaped by Ladakh’s climate, landscape and culture. Spaces, materials, light and movement, indoors and out, are part of how children learn. Not just the box it happens in.

A model, a plan, a school.
The wheel behind the curriculum has been shown at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In August 2025 the plan of the campus was shown to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The building now stands in Ladakh.
Unhurried at the door. Purposeful past it.
Mornings are unhurried. Children arrive on their own feet, greeted by name. Classrooms are rarely silent and never chaotic. Mistakes are treated as information, not embarrassment.
Familiar subjects. Connected thinking.
Desert Flower teaches in familiar subject areas, because families and future institutions need to recognise them. But no subject is taught on its own. Once a concept is rooted locally, in Ladakh’s own ecology, history and craft, it reaches out to regional and global systems. This is true at every stage.
