Subjects at Desert Flower start local and reach outward. Never the other way round.
Desert Flower teaches in familiar subject areas, because families and future institutions need to recognise them. But no subject is taught on its own.
Language is read, written and spoken for real audiences and real purposes: storytelling, letters, oral tradition. Skills are drilled after that, not before.
Mathematics is first understood through local measurement, pattern and engineering, then made formal.
Science begins in Ladakh’s own ecology: watersheds, altitude, weather, wildlife. The laboratory comes after.
Social Studies starts with oral history and village livelihoods, then connects outward to regional and global systems.
Arts, Music, Theatre and Craft are practised as ways of thinking and expressing, often alongside working local artisans.
Physical Education and Health are taken as seriously as any academic subject.
Life Skills like cooking, repair, budgeting and planning are taught as curriculum, not as chores.
Once a concept is rooted locally, we reach outward on purpose. The watershed that teaches ecology is compared with watersheds elsewhere. The local craft economy is set beside global supply chains.
