Desert Flower & HIAL
Desert Flower is part of HIAL's community and runs its own full K-12 school. It is not a preparatory track for HIAL.
HIAL, the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, is a wider community working on new approaches to education and development in Ladakh. Desert Flower began as one of HIAL’s initiatives and shares its core belief: a school’s approach should be shaped by its place, not imported from somewhere else.
Desert Flower is a K-12 school with its own leadership, academic programme, admissions, staff and day-to-day running. It does not report to HIAL on these decisions, and it does not exist to feed students into HIAL.
The link is about ideas and practice, not administration. Both share a belief in contextual, experiential education, and where it helps, students get to meet HIAL’s wider community and work.
The boundary matters as much as the link. Desert Flower’s leadership, curriculum, admissions, staff and finances are its own.
What Comes After Desert Flower
Twelve years at Desert Flower prepare a child for whatever she chooses next. HIAL is one option among many, alongside universities in India and abroad, a trade, creative work, public service, or a path she makes herself. No family should choose Desert Flower expecting a guaranteed route anywhere, and no family should avoid it fearing one.
