How Desert Flower Began
Desert Flower was founded to build a school where the starting point was never in question: the child first, always.
Desert Flower was founded by Dr Gitanjali J Angmo, its Founding Director and Head of School. Her doctoral research on Integral Education is the framework the school is built on. The people who lead, guide and run the school are listed on Our People.
The founders could have tried to reform an existing school. They chose to build a new one instead, in Ladakh, within the community of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives. Here the land itself reminds you that resilience, context and roots are not soft ideas. They are how anything survives.
The school is named after a wildflower that blooms every spring in a landscape where nothing should grow:
“A flower does not bloom by escaping the desert. It blooms by discovering the hidden spring within.”
That is how Desert Flower sees every child.
