What is Desert Flower?
A K-12 school in Ladakh, within the community of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL). It is built on one idea: start with the child, not the curriculum.
Where is the school?
On the HIAL campus at Phyang Road, near Phyang Monastery, Leh, Ladakh 194101, India.
What ages are admitted?
For 2026, Early Years / Kindergarten only. Primary, Middle School and Secondary are not open yet. Exact age bands are still to be confirmed.
What makes Desert Flower different?
Five commitments run through every classroom: learning rooted in Ladakh; learning by doing; thinking and feeling grown together; problems approached across subjects; and Adhyatma, protected time for reflection and self-knowledge.
How does the K-12 journey work?
Early Years / Kindergarten is open now. Primary, Middle School and Secondary / Senior Years are part of the plan and will open as the school grows. The timeline is still to be confirmed.
What is the curriculum?
The usual subjects: language, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, physical education and life skills. Each starts in Ladakh and then reaches out to the wider world.
How does assessment work?
Through narrative reports, portfolios, exhibitions and parent-teacher conferences that look at the whole child, not scores alone.
What are school hours?
Still to be confirmed. They will be published with the current handbook’s timings.
Are meals provided?
Not yet as a formal programme. Please make sure your child has had breakfast at home. Food is not sent from home unless the school asks for it.
Is transport available?

What are the fees?

How does admission work?
It starts with a Personal, Family and Wellbeing Profile, which helps the school get to know your child as a whole person, not only her academic record. The steps are listed on the Admissions page. Timelines are still to be confirmed.
Is Desert Flower connected to HIAL?
Yes. Desert Flower is an initiative of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives and shares its founding ideas, while running independently as a K-12 school.
Do students have to continue to HIAL?
No. HIAL is one option among many, alongside other universities in India or abroad, a trade, creative work or public service.
What is the role of parents?
Full partners. Families are asked to talk directly and openly with the school, and the school promises the same in return.
How can I visit the school?
