Why one more school, and why in Ladakh.
There are already hundreds of schools, and many of them are very good. So why start another one, in Ladakh of all places?
The founders of Desert Flower kept meeting bright children who could solve hard problems but could not tell you what they were good at, what scared them, or what they wanted their lives to be about. The schools that taught them had done their job. The job was just the wrong one.
Most schools are built to produce results that fit on a transcript. Desert Flower is built to produce a person who can stand in a hard place and find a way through. In Ladakh that is not a nice idea. It is how people live here.
Schools usually start with a curriculum and ask the child to fit it. Desert Flower starts with the child and asks what will help this particular person grow. It is a small change in starting point, and it changes everything that follows: how classrooms run, how teachers are trained, how a school day is paced.
Desert Flower is an independent K-12 school within the wider community of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL). It has its own leadership, its own academic programme, its own admissions and its own staff. It shares HIAL’s thinking, and its opportunities where they help, but it is not a feeder school. Students leave ready for whatever comes next: HIAL, other universities in India or abroad, a trade, or work of their own making.
