How Learning Is Designed
Every unit of learning at Desert Flower follows one repeating cycle: encounter, build or do, reflect, connect.
Under every subject, every project and every stage at Desert Flower, the same four steps are at work.
Encounter. Meet the real thing: a river, a market, a material, a problem, a person. Not a description of it.
Build or Do. Make, grow, prototype, perform or solve something with it.
Reflect. Say, honestly and without hurry, what was learned, what was felt, and what is still unclear.
Connect. Link the work outward, to other subjects, to Ladakh, and to the child’s own life.
Then the cycle returns to Encounter, at greater depth. The same river, met again a term later, is no longer the same lesson, because the child who meets it has grown.
A class that only meets a subject through a textbook, or only builds without reflecting, is doing an incomplete version of what we mean by learning. Every teacher is trained to recognise which step a lesson is in, and to make sure none is skipped.
